Kompendium Industrieparks 2012

With an overall surface area of 11 square kilometers, CHEMPARK is one of the largest chemical parks in Europe. The three sites in Leverkusen, Dormagen and Krefeld-Uerdingen boast an impressive vertical and horizontal range of production. The products extend from basic and fine chemicals through to the manufacture and processing of polymers, active ingredients and other chemical products. More than 45,000 people from 50 countries work at the three CHEMPARK sites in over 70 companies.
CURRENTA operates and manages the CHEMPARK. So the research, development and production companies in the chemical industry and associated sectors can focus on their core operations. Whenever the need arises, the chemical park companies can draw from a comprehensive portfolio of over 1,000 professional services. What‘s more, all three sites have outstanding transport connections. Being part of a network with other chemical park companies makes it possible to harness synergies, optimize process chains and reduce costs e.g. for utilities, waste management, production, logistics and other essential activities.

Innovative network strategy
Investors also benefit from CHEMPARK‘s extensive network. A production link-up with other companies offers the opportunity to boost added value along the entire process chain, e.g. through CHEMPARK‘s focus on innovative materials.
One interesting approach was taken by the Verein Netzwerk Innovative Werkstoffe e.V. (Network of Innovative Materials) founded by CHEMPARK in February 2011. It brought together companies, research institutes and associations with the aim of instigating specific projects that are commercially successful. Together, the members of the network – from CHEMPARK all the way through to the region and North-Rhine-Westphalia – cover the entire value chain from raw materials to products for end consumers. Focusing on all aspects of innovative materials – a promising field that cuts across different industries – the network is designed to encourage regional economic growth and enhance the appeal of the North-Rhine-Wetsphalia as an economic area.

Opportunities for future-oriented sectors of industry
CHEMPARK Management is increasingly targeting investors in other future-oriented sectors of industry in addition to CHEMPARK‘s core area of expertise, „innovative materials“. The CHEMPARK infrastructure offers exceptional opportunities for industry hotspots, particularly in the areas of alternative energies, electric mobility, green chemistry, polymer electronics, recycling, storage technologies, structural materials and water technologies.

Germany is a top investment location
According to recent surveys Germany is the most attractive location for investments in Europe. On a global scale it belongs to the five most interesting countries. For example, figures recorded by Germany‘s Chemical Industry Association (VCI) show that direct investments in the German chemical industry from other countries have quadrupled over the last 15 years to over EUR 39 billion.
In 2010, Germany accounted for more than a quarter (28.8 %) of European chemical production and, in the same period, consumed 4.3 % of the chemical world products for EUR 138 billion.

Prospects for companies that look ahead
The CHEMPARK structure was created systematically with a view to generating synergy effects. The task now is to further develop the network to make it future-proof and enable other companies to share in its benefits. Stamina and a good eye for suitable services and companies are key to making CHEMPARK Europe‘s most attractive investment location for the chemical industry and its associated sectors.

Our Profile
Strengths of the three sites

Innovative materials are what binds the three CHEMPARK sites in the Rhineland together. Polycarbonates, polyurethanes and butyl rubbers were invented here, for example. CHEMPARK is still home to the facilities and know-how for their further development, production and accompanying analysis – activities that make up a core area of its expertise. Another of CHEMPARK‘s strengths is the manufacture of silicones, pigments and nanoparticles.

CHEMPARK Leverkusen is one of the world‘s most versatile locations for the chemical industry, producing more than 5,000 chemicals on an area of 480 hectares. For instance, components for 9 out of 10 product groups used by the automotive industry across the globe are produced in CHEMPARK. It is primarily home to manufacturers of inorganic and organic products, dyestuffs, polyurethanes, rubbers and precursors for pharmaceuticals.

Across an area of 360 hectares, CHEMPARK Dormagen offers a wealth of opportunities for companies in the chemical industry. Manufacturers of crop protection agents, plastics, rubbers (tires), polymers (insulating materials, paint components, adhesive components) and organic intermediates are represented at the site, which boasts direct links with the petrochemical industry.

The companies based in CHEMPARK Krefeld-Uerdingen produce a good 2,000 chemicals, primarily polyurethanes, white and color pigments and intermediates for crop protection agents, fragrances and flavors. One of the site‘s best-known products is the polycarbonate Makrolon®. Covering an area of 260 hectares, the site is home to the world‘s largest production volume of inorganic pigments.
