In a current example taken from the field of drilling technology in the oil and gas industry, efforts were made to greatly reduce abrasive wear to the drill head. Choice of a suitable grade of tungsten carbide was based on a detailed analysis of the wear pattern and the geometry of all applied parts and components. GD3F, GD05, GD10 and GD20 were selected as four different, well-adapted qualities. In order to economize on investment costs, not all secondarily affected components were replaced, but were instead upgraded by flame-sprayed surfaces made of tungsten carbide or aluminum oxide, depending on the degree of exposure. Now all the pertinent wear-prone components can be replaced in a single maintenance job.
