EDITORIAL Corona Catalyses Transformation be an important factor for the industry. The chemical industry is already active here, as the current projects in the areas of energy supply for chemical sites, hydrogen strategy and sustainable chemicals show. Closing the loops in plastics production is another topic that is cur- rently gaining momentum and will lead to new projects and approaches. This new issue of our “International Compendium of Chemical, Pharmaceutical, Biotech Industrial Parks” concisely summarises current aspects of industrial parks and presents trends and services to a broad readership. As in previous years, this issue will once again provide overviews – not only of the performance data of indust- rial parks in Europe, but also of current pipeline projects in Europe. And our news section provides you with up- to-date information about changes at European chemical and pharmaceutical sites. And finally, numerous impor- tant chemical sites introduce themselves again in adver- torials. I wish you profitable reading. The European chemical industry has held its own comparatively well in the corona crisis: While the econo- my in most countries of the European Union has suf- fered a double-digit slump in some cases, the production of chemical companies has only fallen by 4.4 % between January and September 2020 compared to the previous year. Nevertheless, the absolute figures are a heavy blow for European chemicals: between January and August 2020, the volume of exports to markets outside the EU fell by 6.6 billion Euros, and with the second wave of corona in autumn, the economic recovery from the sum- mer has also slowed down significantly. For the chemical sites and chemical parks in Europe, in addition to the current economic development, the me- dium and long-term strategic changes are particularly important. And these are clearly evident as a result of the corona crisis. These include securing the supply chains in the chemical industry, but above all also in the phar- maceutical industry. In November, for example, the EU Commission presented an ambitious strategy on how it intends to ensure the future supply of high-quality and safe medicines to Europeans. And this includes building a resilient European pharmaceutical industry that is less dependent on imports from Asia. The established phar- maceutical and fine chemicals sites and industrial parks are an important starting point in this respect. Consortium Drives Power-to-Methanol Project Forward German LNG Terminal and RWE Examine Hydrogen Possibilities in Brunsbüttel News E W R : e r u t c i P RWE and German LNG Terminal intend to jointly explore the possibilities for green hydro- gen. The two companies have concluded an agreement in the form of a so-called Memoran- dum of Understanding to pro- mote the use of this climate- friendly fuel from renewable sources. In September 2018, the companies had already sig- ned a long-term contract for a substantial part of the LNG im- port capacity of the planned terminal. Domestic production in Germany is not expected to be able to meet the expected future demand for hydrogen, so the climate-friendly fuel will have to be imported. LNG im- port terminals such as Bruns- büttel can be combined with feed-in points for liquid hydro- gen produced in other regions of the world where wind and solar energy is available on a larger scale and at lower cost than in Germany. The existing gas pipelines connected to the LNG terminal are well suited for the local distribution of hy- drogen. Javier Moret, respon- sible for the global LNG busi- ness at RWE Supply & Trading, explains: “We are in favour of the use of LNG because it alrea- dy represents a clean and affor- dable energy for Germany. As an alternative fuel for shipping and heavy goods transport, it helps to reduce emissions. The power-to- methanol project aims to re- place the material otherwise obtained from fossil sources with sustainably produced me- thanol in the future. The carbon dioxide required for production is separated from emissions by means of Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) and combined with hydrogen, which is gen- erated with electricity from re- newable energies. In a first pha- se, the seven partners initially intend to complete another joint feasibility study in prepa- ration for the demonstration plant. The plant is to be built in 2022 and put into operation in the same year - on the Inovyn site in Lillo. The company, origi- nally a joint venture in which the chemical group Solvay also had a stake, is now an exclusive subsidiary of Ineos. The produc- tion capacity of the plant is ex- pected to reach up to 8 kt sus- tainable methanol. In the fu- ture, larger quantities could al- so be made available for wider industrial use, including as a sustainable fuel for marine and road transport. Each tonne of methanol produced could save at least as much CO2 emissions. Methanol is an important and versatile raw material for the chemical industry, with nu- merous applications in other industries. This key raw materi- al is indispensable for the daily operation of the Port of Ant- werp as Europe‘s largest inte- grated energy and chemical cluster. The consortium that was formally established is called Power to Methanol Ant- werp. Other members besides Inovyn are the energy supplier Engie, the long-distance pipe- line operator Fluxys, the waste disposal group Indaver, the logi- stics service provider Oiltan- king, the port of Antwerp and the investment company of the Flemish government PMV. Each is expected to contribute its specific expertise to the project, for example on the logistical aspects of production. Siemens Builds Another Combined Cycle Power Plant for Evonik in Marl y g r e n E s n e m e i S : e r u t c i P Evonik is modernising the ener- gy supply at the Marl Chemical Park: the company has ordered another combined cycle power plant from Siemens. Following the start of construction of the combined cycle power plant or- dered by Evonik from Siemens Energy in autumn 2019, the chemical company has now or- dered another gas-fired power plant. The new plant, consisting of an SGT-800 gas turbine, an SST-400 steam turbine and two generators, will have an electri- cal output of 90 megawatts and a thermal output of 220 megawatts and is scheduled to go on stream in 2022. It re- places a reserve gas power plant in the chemical park. In addition to the plant compo- nents, Siemens Energy will also supply the SPPA-T3000 control system. In addition, a long-term service contract will ensure the availability of the power plant and its components.

Although basic chemicals still account for the lion’s share of the business (over 60%), they still account for the lion‘s share of the total, including petrochemicals (25.4%), polymers (21.3%) and inorganics (14.6%). However, the most important single item in Europe is the Specialty Chemicals division with 27.2%. Moreover, a long-lasting upward trend in other sectors has recently also been halted. In a quarter-on-quarter comparison, the PCD was down 0.2 % in Q3, whereas in the previous quarter it rose by 0.4 % year-on-year. The greatest declines in this quarter were again re- corded for automation systems: Compared to Q2, they fell by 3.2 %. Year-on-year, automation systems lost a full 12.2 % in value. In contrast, the decline in the price of piping material now seems to have come to a halt: Al- though a year-on-year decline of 8.5 % is still being re- corded, a comparison of Q3 and Q2 in 2020 shows only a marginal decline in prices. Construction technology: Significant decline after all-time high The price trend in construction technology is also excit- ing at present: at 115.3 index points, a new all-time high was reached in Q2 2020. In the meantime, the area which includes the price development for pipe bridges, earthworks, concrete and masonry work and the exten- sion of buildings is 2.2 % lower than in early summer. This result is flanked by an equal decline in momentum in the “Insulation & Coating” sector – here, the upward trend that has lasted for half a decade also slowed down significantly in the last quarter; whereas quarterly com- parisons regularly showed a plus of 1 to 2 % in recent years, prices in Q3 2020 moved sideways by + 0.2 %. The situation is similar for assembly services, where prices are also moving sideways by + 0.2 %. The fact that the overall index lost only 0.2 % against this background is mainly due to the index heavyweight “engineering ser- vices”. Plant Engineering CT: What specific effects of the corona crisis have you felt in the company? Wolfram Gstrein: There are several dimensions to this question. Initially, the focus was on the direct restrictions resulting from risk considerations. On a Friday in the middle of March, we as Managing Directors in the VTU Group decided to switch the entire operation to home-of- fice mode as far as possible. Although this was a jolt weekend action , it nevertheless played out smoothly. A major advantage was that our company had already in- vested continuously in a modern and well-functioning IT infrastructure and was already geared up to making home offices possible, albeit not to the same extent. We had to install additional capacities at short notice, espe- cially for notebooks and headsets. The work processes had to be adapted appropriately. This applies to areas such as recording working hours, digital signatures or meetings via video conferencing.. CT: And how has the pandemic affected your business ? Wolfram Gstrein: In this situation, we benefit from the fact that we serve primarily as plant designers. We main- ly produce paper, so to speak, and nowadays, of course, in digital form, so we don‘t have to maintain any systems or machines on site. Our core services have been rela- tively unaffected by the corona crisis. One exception concerns projects that were already in the construction phase, where we were responsible for construction man- agement or construction supervision, construction sup- port or on-site qualification. There were occasions when customers had to leave cons-truction sites idle from one day to the next. Other interruptions occurred where customers’ business cases were adversely affected by the crisis. For example, projects had to be cancelled or post- poned by several months. As a result, we lost income for which we had already planned. I estimate that VTU suffered a loss of revenue of about 15 % in the lockdown. The loss is spread evenly across all sectors – pharmaceu- ticals, chemicals, oil and gas. To compensate for the drop in sales, we adopted a short-time working plan for a brief period. CT: On the other hand, have any new short-term orders been placed as a result of the Corona crisis? For exam- ple, because of production switchovers? Wolfram Gstrein: There are winners and losers in every crisis. Hard hit areas such as tourism suffered even more than our relatively stable industry. Nevertheless, we are also feeling the pinch in our industry. The winners of the crisis are companies that produce disinfectants, for exam- ple. Here, investment has been and is currently being pushed very hard. We also have customers who manufac- ture precursors or products for corona tests, which have also attracted enormous attention. CORONA turns the energy world upside down The corona crisis has profound implications for energy use. This is the conclusion of the new World Energy Outlook published by the Inter- national Energy Agency IEA. According to the IEA analyses presented in the World Energy Outlook 2020, energy demand will fall by 5 % this year due to the corona pandemic. As re- newable energies will take priority over fossil fuels, energy-related CO2 emissions will be reduced by 7 %. Oil consumption is expected to fall by 8 % and coal consumption by 7 % by the end of 2020. The study also shows that the pandemic is having a major impact on investment in the energy sector, which is expected to fall by 18 % in 2020 compared to the previous year. This year the IEA has again analysed different sce- narios. The Stated Policies Scenario (STEPS) is based on the current political framework and the assump- tion that the pandemic will be brought under control in 2021. Corona pandemic will delay energy demand for two years In this scenario, global GDP will also return to pre-cri- sis levels next year and global energy demand in early 2023, although the situation will vary considerably depending on the energy source. Over the next two decades, according to the IEA, renewable energies will supply 90 % of the projected strong growth in global electrici- ty demand, led by continued wide use of photovoltaics. Author for the first time in modern energy history, according to the IEA. In the STEPS scenario, the use of coal as an energy source will be on average 8 % lower by 2030 than before the crisis. This is due to a combination of increased use of renewables, cheap natural gas and a policy of phasing out coal production. Greenhouse gas emissions are slowing down significantly Global CO2 emissions will not exceed 2019 levels until 2027, although energy demand will return to 2019 levels in early 2023. This reflects changes in the energy mix, with renewable energies proving resilient and flourishing in the post-pandemic recovery, while coal demand will fall sharply in 2020, rise only slightly and then fall steadily. In the STEPS, CO2 emissions in- crease to 36 Gt by 2030, which is below the corre- sponding scenario of the World Energy Outlook of 2019. However, a key to long-term development will be the sustainability efforts of policy makers. For exam- ple, the IEA estimates that CO2 emissions could fall below 27 Gt by 2030 if the “Sustainable Development Scenario”, SDS, is implemented. However, the measures taken by governments un- der the SDS put energy systems on a different path, with CO2 emissions falling below 27 Gt by 2030 – 9 Gt less than in the Stated Policies Scenario. However, this would require a 40 % reduction in industrial emissions over the next 10 years. Even more radical, however, is the “Net Zero Emission 2050 Scenario” (NZE2050), which the IEA is running through for the first time, in which various industrialised nations make a serious attempt to reduce their net greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050. The research consortium investigat- ed four technically feasible ways of achieving climate neutrality in ammonia production at each of the selected sites at Dormagen, Geleen and Antwerp. The use of natural gas with CCS (blue hydrogen), grid-bound elec- trolysis (grey hydrogen), supply of green hydrogen and the production of turquoise hydrogen were investigated in comparison with the conventional process. In addi- tion, the specific production costs and CO2 emission reduction in relation to the expected development of energy carrier and CO2 costs up to 2050 and beyond were analysed for a production conversion along the technology options. As a result of the trilateral research collaboration, the universal challenges for the sites were identified and a better understanding of the individual conditions was developed. The analyses show the respective demands on the local supply networks which arise in the course of technological defossilisation options. The path of natural gas steam reforming coupled with CCS application has proven to be a cost-effective option for all three sites. However, it would require an infrastructure for trans- port and long-term CO2 storage of about 2.7 million tonnes of CO2 per year. This potential path represents a common transnational challenge in technical, regulatory and societal dimensions. On the other hand, port or coastal locations such as Antwerp could offer opportuni- ties for the future import of climate-neutral energy sources. For example, ship terminals could be re- designed or access to large offshore parks in the North Sea could be exploited. These measures could ensure future energy supplies to the industrial region Antwerp- Rotterdam-Rhine-Ruhr. The decarbonisation of industrial processes will re- quire site-specific solutions, but these must be imple- mented regionally and, in this case, trilaterally. The effi- cient use of existing infrastructures in combination with new infrastructures can accompany the transformation in a beneficial way. For a successful industrial turna- round, it will be crucial to look beyond the spatial boundaries of a location and political boundaries. [ak] Facts for Decision Makers ● Industrial decarbonisation requires site-specific and thus re- gional, but also cross-border solutions. ● Chemical sites are already strongly networked in their infra- structure, but primarily for fossil fuels. Further expansion of the infrastructure is therefore necessary for alternative ener- gy sources. ● Depending on the method of production, hydrogen can be a suitable energy carrier for reducing CO2 emissions from en- ergy-intensive industries. Access to the know-how of a water specialist Evides has taken over the water supply of DOW Terneu- zen under a DBFO (Design, Build, Finance, Operate) contract. According to this model, responsibility for all the processes listed in the contract description is in the hands of EIW. The chemical company pays fixed water prices and can concentrate on its core business. This type of operator model saves the customer investment in infrastructure and at the same time gives access to the latest technology and the know-how of a water specialist. In the case of in-house operation, the total costs of oper- ation and the possible risks associated with water treat- ment are often disregarded. Changing conditions due to new water quality requirements, stricter discharge con- ditions, new production processes or the renewal of old plants often present industrial companies with major challenges. Just as important is the experience of the plant manag- ers with the corresponding technologies. In many plants, which have been taken over and modernised by a water supplier, the customers have benefitted from considerable savings. Especially the operation of a wide variety of plants enables water specialists to learn about the advan- tages and disadvantages of the respective technologies and helps them make the right decisions for future applica- tions. Takeover of the water supply at the Terneuzen site by EIW in 1999 intensified efforts to close water cycles and to explore alternative raw water sources, and thus led to considerable water and cost savings. Highly Pure Process and Demineralized Water from Wastewater The plant taken over also included a seawater desalina- tion unit, which produced part of the deionized water for the site up until 2007. High treatment costs, susceptibility to fluctuating salt concentrations in the brackish water zone, algal growth, progressive corrosion and fouling were reasons to look for alternative solutions. After re- ducing the chemical, water and energy consumption of most other treatment processes by up to 80 %, the deci- sion was made to replace seawater desalination. Since seawater treatment combined microfiltration (MF) and reverse osmosis (UO), the use of other raw waters was also possible after thorough modification. As an alternative feedstock to saline surface waters, the effluent of the municipal sewage treatment plant of Terneuzen was a suitable option. The purified municipal wastewater treatment plant effluent is characterized by a largely constant composition and above all by low salt concentrations. In particular, the high osmotic pressures necessary in reverse osmosis plants for seawater desali- nation result in high operating costs of this technology. Not only could the plant be operated at a lower pressure, but the overall yield could also be significantly increased. After intensive preliminary tests, the modified plant went into operation in 2007. During the course of operation, however, microfiltra- tion proved to be a bottleneck and an obstacle to the attainment of a higher yield. Its hollow fibre modules, originally designed for the filtration of seawater, had a MBR/UO process concept for the production of process water from wastewater. The resulting need for renewal coincided with new demands placed on the regional water board as operator of the Terneuzen wastewater treatment plant. In order to be able to meet future effluent quality demands as well as to realise a necessary increase in capacity, larger invest- ments would have been necessary. Considerable Savings At the initiative of EIW, these challenges were bundled and included in the concept of a membrane bioreactor (MBR) for the treatment of 20 % of the municipal waste- water at the Terneuzen wastewater treatment plant. Figure 2 shows the complete MBR/UO process concept for the production of process water from wastewater. The MBR plant produces 400 to 620 m³/h feed water for subsequent treatment to deionized water. For this purpose, the permeate of the MBR plant is pumped to the DOW site where the reverse osmosis plant is located. Investments in the mid double-digit million euro range are planned for the con- struction work. Production is scheduled to start in 2022, and the investment is planned to enable the chemicals group to signifi- cantly expand its production capacity for hybrid polymers and further strengthen its focus on specialty chemicals products. Wacker has been producing silane-termi- nated polymers at its Burghausen produc- tion site for over 15 years. Business with hybrid polymers has since grown strongly. The company is now the second-largest manufacturer of silane-terminated binders for adhesives and sealants. “We are seeing a strong growth in demand for such prod- ucts. Against this background, the decision to expand our hybrid polymer production is only logical,” says Wacker Executive Board member Auguste Willems. Alongside mar- ket access and the availability of key raw materials, production engineering aspects were the key factors in choosing a site for capacity expansion. “In Nünchritz we have space for fully integrated production, which we can even expand if necessary,” says Wil- lems. According to its own statements, hy- brid polymers are currently among the most important growth areas for the com- pany’s Silicones division. “Silanes based on our innovative alpha technology are used in their manufacture,” says business unit manager Robert Gnann. “Hybrid polymers have a unique property profile.” According to Wacker, its Alphasilan technology is a unique selling point worldwide. Silane-ter- minated polymers allow the production of particularly environmentally friendly adhe- sives. “The aspect of sustainability is be- coming increasingly important in the for- mulation of adhesives and sealants. This is what makes hybrid polymers so attractive for manufacturers and customers,” empha- sises Gnann. “With Alphasilan technology, we can develop tailor-made binders for a wide range of adhesive types and applica- tions. The necessary energy is supplied by electricity from renewable sources. The pilot plant is located in Marl in the northern Ruhr area in Germany. It is an essential part of the Rheticus I and II re- search projects. The researchers have taken nature as a model for the idea of artificial photosynthesis behind the Rheticus experi- mental facility. In the same way that plants use solar energy in order to combine carbon dioxide (CO2) and water over several steps, for example to produce sugar, artificial pho- tosynthesis uses renewable energies to pro- duce valuable chemicals from CO2 and wa- ter via electrolysis with the help of bacteria. This type of artificial photosynthesis can thus serve as an energy store and help to close the carbon cycle and reduce carbon dioxide pollution in the atmosphere. The pilot plant has gone into operation in Marl, at Evonik‘s largest site. It consists of a CO electrolyzer developed by Siemens Energy, a water electrolyzer and the bioreactor with Evonik‘s know-how. In the first step, the electrolyzers convert carbon dioxide and water into carbon monoxide (CO) and hy- drogen (H2) using electricity. Special micro- organisms use this synthesis gas to pro- duce special chemicals, initially for research purposes. These are starting materials for special plastics or food supplements, for example. The composition of the synthesis gas and the interaction between electroly- sis and fermentation will be further opti- mised. In addition, a unit for processing the liquid from the bioreactor will be created in order to obtain the pure chemicals. After successful completion of the current Rheti- cus project phase (Rheticus II), Evonik and Siemens Energy plan to have a platform technology available that can produce en- ergy-rich and valuable substances such as specialty chemicals or artificial fuels from CO2 in a modular and flexible manner. The new plant is part of a multi-stage investment plan in the European market for battery materials. The plant will use precursors from the compa- ny’s previously announced plant in Harja- valta, Finland. Construction work in Schwarzheide started in August 2020 and the plant is expected to be operational in 2022. The new plant for cathode materials will be equipped with modern process technology and will allow the supply of BASF battery materials to approximately 400,000 fully electric vehicles per year. Fi- nally, Dr. Martin Brudermüller, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of BASF, said that electric mobility is “a fast growing market”. Politicians are also convinced of the project‘s future viability. The Federal Government and the State of Brandenburg have therefore provided funding of around €15 million. “The ground-breaking cere- mony by BASF is a further step in the right direction for Germany as an industrial loca- tion and the establishment of a European value-added chain for electric mobility. Our goal is to produce the best and most pow- erful batteries in Germany and Europe,” explained Peter Altmaier, Federal Minister of Economics and Energy. The project will also contribute to successful structural change in the region, the Minister believes. BASF intends to reliably supply cell manu- facturers and the automotive industry with cathode materials with high energy density, produced sustainably and locally and meet- ing their specific needs in Europe. “The new plant, together with the precursor plant in Harjavalta, will use efficient manufacturing processes, a high share of renewable ener- gy, upstream integration with key raw ma- terials such as cobalt and nickel, and short transport distances along the value chain. These measures will lead to a 30% lower carbon footprint compared to the conven- tional industry standard“, said Dr. Peter Schuhmacher, head of the Catalysts divi- sion.
