Achema 2012: Emergence of a Post-crisis Chemical Industry

Post-Crisis Prospects

22.05.2012 It seems as if the world has put the economic crisis behind it and is at last able to breathe freely again. Markets have recovered and many companies have returned to pre-crisis levels of business, sometimes even surpassing them. Good omens for Achema, which this year is being staged for the 30th time as the world forum for the process industry.

Around 4,000 exhibitors from all corners of the earth on an area about 140,000 m2, 175,000 participants from over 90 different countries, including 30,000 executives from top and middle management – Achema represents the communication hub of the process industry and an international summit for the chemical community. „One thing is certain: with a proportion of around 50 percent of exhibitors from abroad, Achema 2012 will be even more international than all of its predecessors,“ says Dr. Thomas Scheuring, managing director of Dechema. This is proof positive of the internationalisation of the branch – at the same time it is proof positive of the undiminished importance of Germany as a trade fair location. No other country has such a concentration of leading fairs with worldwide impact on its territory as Germany. The German chemical industry can look back on a successful business year 2011: production rose by 2.2 percent and sales improved by 7.7 percent to over €184 billion. This trend has positively impacted employment, according to Dr. Utz Tillmann, director-general of the German chemical industry association VCI: „Last year, German chemical companies hired around 12,000 new personnel. This corresponds to an increase by three percent to currently 427,000 staff.“

Efficiency and Sustainability Remain Top Issues

With this year‘s focus topic ‘Innovative Energy Carriers and Storage‘ the organizer has certainly struck a nerve – if the resounding response is anything to go by. Together with the perennial favourite ‘Energy Efficiency‘ and the previous special theme ‘Renewable Resources‘ this opens up business opportunities for the process industry which integrates the interdisciplinary know-how for innovations in these fields. The event ‘Biobased World‘ incorporates another core theme of Achema and is represented by more than 700 exhibitors. This topic stands for the technologies, products, and services covering the whole gamut of the biobased value chain, for example biomass, biobased chemicals, fuels, and products.

More than Nuts and Bolts

Besides the traditional core theme of China, this time the Achema Worldwide Business Forum is focussing its attention on Azerbaijan, a country that is arguably a relative newcomer to the established chemicals producing nations. This is likely to make it extremely interesting to a number of Achema exhibitors. The event series clusters around the traditional congress programme featuring 900 lectures packed into every available time and space slot in the tight congress schedule. The congress is supplemented by numerous prestigious guest events, such as the expert round table ‘Automation Dialog‘, jointly hosted by Namur, ZVEI, and ARC and the ‘International Powder and Nanotechnology Forum‘, organized with the support of The Society of Chemical Engineers, Japan (SCEJ).
